No one really needs to carry as much luggage as Joan Collins did at Heathrow, however plenty of celebs have got the balance right, we’ve picked a few of our favourites below.

A week in style

This week we’ve been treated to an array of fabulously fashionable awards ceremonies; the Grammy awards, the Bafta awards and the Elle Style Awards all saw Hollywood A-listers donning their frocks to tread the red carpet in the hope of making it onto the Vintage Child hot style list (or maybe not). But still, we bring you the Vintage Child hot style list of the most stylish week in fashion this year and some vintage alternatives from our very own shop.

Untitled-3
Peaches Geldof in pink lace and ‘dusky pink prom dress’ from vintagechild.co.uk

Peaches Geldof looked perfectly pregnant in a vintage style pink lace floor length dress set off by a pop of blue in the form of a clutch bag. She completed her look for the Elle Style Awards with 1940’s cropped curls and a smack of red lipstick.

We love the look because: The vintage style is present without being overdone, the colour is gorgeous and the loosely fitted top works well with her slender frame at the same time as complimenting her little bump.

Untitled-2
Jessica Chastain in Roland Mouret and ‘blue pleat dress’ from vintagechild.co.uk

Jessica Chastain teams red lips with a cobolt blue asymmetric structured satin gown by Roland Mouret. The Zero Dark Thirty star was nominated for Best Actress at the Baftas for her role in the film but lost out to Emmanuelle Riva.

We love this look because: The colour is simply electric and off-sets her flame-red hair to perfection. The unusual structural aspect adds some intrigue whilst complimenting her curves.

Laura bailey in Roksanda Ilincic and ‘hot pink column dress’ from vintagechild.co.uk

While Laura Bailey wasn’t directly involved in nominations at the Baftas her tangerine orange Roksanda Ilincic dress has given her as much publicity as the award winners themselves.

Why we love this look: the colour and simplicity of this gown are elegant and daring while the jewelled clutch adds a touch of bling. While the shape of the dress is boxy and straight Laura’s slender frame carries the look well.

Untitled-3
Florence Welch in Givenchy, Taylor Swift in J. Mendel and Rihanna in Azzedine Alaia

Florence Welch was her usual daring self in a custom made emerald green iridescent Givenchy gown while Taylor swift and Rihanna went for sheer elegance in white and red. All the starlets were very modestly covered up, bringing a refreshing chance from the usual cleavage fest the awards ceremonies bring. Most went for floor length elegance with a hint of leg or skin peeping through a sheer layer. The fashion feel this week has been heavy on striking sophistication, structural gowns and bright pops of block colour.

A special mention has to go to Dame Helen Mirren who, at the age of 67, is rocking a new bubblegum pink crop. Helen was keen to go pink after being inspired by British beauty Sophie Sumner on America’s Next Top Model and said: “I just thought it would be  fun to dye my hair pink”. Go Helen!

And the worst…

When bad things happen to good celebrities

A celebrities’ biggest fear has got to be the dreaded wardrobe malfunction (unless you’re Janet Jackson). And unfortunately for poor old Jennifer Lawrence that fear came true this week at this years SAG Awards, suffering from pneumonia and in two minds to attend, she braved the crowd looking incredibly gorgeous in a navy blue Christian Dior gown from the Couture Spring 2013 collection. It was at the crucial moment of going up to accept her award for the prestigious award: ‘Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role’ for her part in Silver Linings Playbook, that the embarrassing moment happened. As she was hugging co stars her dress got caught, ripping the lining and exposing the top of her thighs to fellow actors. But in true Jennifer style she accepted the award with the grace and elegance that’s gained her such a respected status as one of our favorite celebs on the circuit.

So we thought in honor of poor Jen we’d look back at some famous wardrobe malfunctions, however while the lovely Jennifer certainly wasn’t expecting this incident we’re not so sure all of these celebs can say the same. But be it an accident or on purpose, cringing at celebs who are victims of the dreaded wardrobe malfunction has become so popular that the stunt has numerous categories! So are you ready to squirm?

The winner: Marilyn Monroe

Who doesn’t recognise this infamous image of Marilyn bashfully trying to hold down her skirt as she stands on a subway air vent? Well no one, and that’s why the dress is now worth an estimated $1-2 million, phew! That’s one wardrobe malfunction she didn’t regret.

#2. The granny knicker slip:

The winner: Emma Watson (because she’s so sweet about it!)

One gust of wind makes that delicate designer dress behave in the most unladylike fashion. And never do they have nice fancy pants on, it’s always the full Spanx glory which makes us normals feel a little bit better about ourselves.  At least I was wearing underwear commented a smiling Emma who definitely saw the funny side of the incident, bless.

The winner: Janet Jackson

Now who remembers that Janet Jackson incident? I’m sure you all do, it was at the 2004 Superbowl halftime show, remember now? She sang and danced with the delectable Justin Timberlake who reached across and inexplicably ripped off a crucial part of Janet’s attire. Wardrobe malfunction? Hmm, we think not. If you’re going to “accidentally” whip out your nipple and pretend it wasn’t meant to happen then maybe don’t wear boob accessories!

The winner: Britney Spears

Believe it or not Britney actually pulled this stunt several times both with and without underwear. It was during her meltdown years so perhaps she can be excused but accident or on purpose, no one wants to see that Brit.

Whether it’s a gust of wind, unfortunate underwear or a bad exit from a car, seeing these celebs get caught out just brings them a little bit closer to earth for us normal folk. And we have to squeeze a bit of Vintage Child into this post so here goes…don’t forget to visit us at http://vintagechild.co.uk/ to make sure you carry out your very own wardrobe malfunctions in style!

Olympics inspiring fashion

With the London 2012 Olympics in full swing and team GB on top form it seems we are all getting stuck in to the full spirit of the games. So we’re having a little look at what they’re all wearing and what impact the Olympics are having on the world of fashion. We start with a bit of bling, this gold and silver metallic jumpsuit has more than a little bit of a sporting influence, the gold and silver are are medal inspired colours and the high neck, long arms and thick hems are also regular features in both Olympic and sporting kits.

Sport and fashion

This year’s Olympics are undoubtably something special and that is because they are being held in our fair old city of London, so who better to design the athletes kits than British born and London educated fashion designer Stella McCartney. “The first place to start on a project like this is to look at the Union flag” said McCartney when she first began her kit designs “for me it’s one of the most beautiful flags in the world and it was important for me to stay true to that iconic design but also to modernise it and present it in a contemporary way”. The final outcome shows sections of the Union flag with blue and white hints, saving the red for the trim and footwear.

It seems as though McCartney’s designs have inspired other designers too and we’re seeing more and more trends from the fabrics and silhouettes usually associated with sportswear being adopted on the catwalk. This includes fashion designers such as Alexander Wang and Victoria Beckham who’s latest collections have incorporated elements heavily influenced by sportswear.

This image shows Karlie Kloss wearing one of Victoria Beckham’s sports inspired dresses alongside the Olympic gymnast Jonathan Horton wearing Adidas – part of the collection which designed with Stella McCartney.

Sportswear influencing the catwalk during a major sporting event is nothing new and designers have been giving subtle, and not so subtle, nods towards the sporting world for as long as the Olympics itself has been running (that’s 30 years). This idea is well demonstrated in the “Sport and Fashion” exhibition featured in Bath’s fashion museum. The exhibition to celebrate the Olympics shows over 50 items ranging from functional sportswear to high fashion designer pieces subtly inspired by sport. Features of the exhibition include traditional sports kits such as historic skiing and tobogganing outfits next to fashion forward designs from designer Pam Hogg who is also credited for designing the ‘second skin’ stage wear worn on stage by the likes of Cheryl Cole and Jessie J.

But if skin-tight Lycra’s not really your thing why not embrace the sportswear trend with a simple vintage varsity T-shirt from our selection online and whatever you decide to wear, enjoy the final few days of this fantastically British Olympics.
